About Volunteering

The ACT has the highest rate of volunteering in Australia with 38% of our population volunteering. The diversity of the ACT’s community interests is reflected in the range of volunteering activities in which they engage with the primary areas in: sport or physical recreation (24%), community/ welfare (19%) and education and training (19%).

The Australian Bureau of Statistics estimated that in 2006 – 07, the 4.6 million volunteers (Australia wide) who supported community organisations contributed 623 million hours, equating the 317 000 full time equivalents. The economic value of these hours was estimated at $14.6 billion.

Are you interested in volunteering but do not know where to start? Volunteering ACT can assist you to find the volunteer position right for you. There are several options:

Search for volunteer positions on our website:

  1. Put your information into the search box on the right hand side of the screen titled ‘Become a Volunteer’
  2. Search for a volunteer position that suits your interests
  3. Once you have found a position, simply express interest.
  4. You will get an email with the organisation’s details.
  5. Call them to arrange a meeting regarding the volunteering position

Have an interview with a referral officer at Volunteering ACT:

  1. Call Volunteering ACT and arrange an interview time to come in and see one of our Referral Officers
  2. Come to your appointment and one of Volunteering ACT’s Referral Officers will assist you to identify a suitable volunteering opportunity
  3. Meet with the organisation concerned to discuss the volunteering position
