SPICE has partnerships with over 500 businesses across the ACT, Queanbeyan and Yass region. To be a business partner, you need to be willing to give a student the opportunity to experience your place of work. As a business mentor, you agree to have a student for a minimum of 1 day a week for 5 weeks so that the student can learn about the world of work. We encourage businesses to point out the literacy and numeracy or educational requirements for entry into the industry.
The SPICE Program plays a pivotal role in addressing skills shortages, particularly in the construction, automotive, hair & beauty and child care sectors. Businesses can determine if a student on the SPICE Program is a suitable candidate for an Australian School Based Apprenticeship (ASBA), full apprenticeship, traineeship and/or further employment within their industry.
This is an opportunity for your business to support and mentor young people in your community, encouraging the student’s development through shared knowledge and skills.
Are students paid for work experience? No. Hosting a SPICE placement should not cause the business any out of pocket expense.
Are students participating in work experience covered by insurance? Yes. Students participating in a work placement are completely covered by insurance.
Will students have their ‘white card’ for their construction placement? Yes. Students will obtain their ‘white card’ before attending the placement.
Will students only attend work during school hours? No. Students will work the hours nominated by the business but must be between 7am and 7pm. Students are not covered by insurance on weekends or school holidays.
