The Students Participating in Community Enterprise (SPICE) Program began in 2002 as a one year pilot funded by the ACT Education Department program, ‘Schools as Communities’. Within this pilot, 17 students were placed with a 100% success rate.
Volunteering ACT secured funding to develop and expand the program, beginning in 2003, to meet demand from ACT High Schools. In 2004 further funding was provided to the program for four years through the Community Inclusion Fund, administered by the Community Inclusion Board on behalf of the Department of Disability, Housing and Community Services. The program also attracted financial support from the Canberra Airport and more recently by The Snow Foundation.
