About Connections

The Connections Program celebrated 15 years of service in the Canberra community in 2010. The Program is currently funded by the ACT Health Directorate and managed by Volunteering ACT. Its ongoing success is the result of the commitment of dedicated volunteers within our community who provide support to those facing the challenges of mental illness or mental health issues.

The program is designed to gently strengthen participants on their recovery journey to experience a growing quality of life. Through role-modelling healthy, supportive relationships based around shared common interests, participants can achieve their personal goals and reconnect with the mainstream community.

The volunteer and participant meet together regularly for an hour or more to engage in a social activity built around common interests.

Some activities may be:

  • go for a walk
  • have a coffee
  • see a movie
  • attend a sporting event
  • become involved in a mainstream community group
  • learn new life skills
