Recipient: Albert Green
Background
Albert Green is a Veteran's Affairs TPI (Total and Permanently Incapacitated) returned serviceman with three grown children, one of whom is intellectually disabled. Despite the challenges associated with his own circumstances, Albert (with the strong support of his wife Joyce) volunteers for several organisations, including Special Olympics ACT, ACT Boccia and Legacy.
Scope of Work
Albert is the Treasurer of Special Olympics ACT, which entails significant financial responsibilities, fortnightly and monthly meetings, and numerous other activities. He also coaches golf and bocce for the organisation, supervises other volunteers, procures trophies and provides refreshments.
Albert's work with boccia (bocce for wheelchair bound athletes) includes training and supervision, as well as attendance at meetings, refereeing and acting as the ACT delegate to the national body. He also acts as a carer when accompanying the team during interstate travel.
Albert has worked with Legacy for 23 years. He cares for widows by providing help with jobs around the house on a weekly basis. Albert and Joyce also billet a junior legatee from interstate for one week each year prior to Anzac Day.
Impact on the Community
Albert's selfless commitment has had a profound effect on individuals and the broader ACT community. His work in Special Olympics ACT probably prevented the organisation failing during a particularly difficult time, to the benefit of more than 100 athletes for whom the Special Olympics is a key part of their lives.
Similarly, his contribution to ACT Boccia and similar organisations has improved the lives of those who are intellectually disabled in the ACT. The work of Legacy is well documented, and Albert has made an outstanding contribution to that cause over many years.
Time Dedicated
Albert spends 15 hours per week in committee work, more than 21 hours per week coaching, and 10-14 hours per week with Legacy.
