A Dedicated Volunteer

Matthew Box - the new ambassador for volunteering in the ACT

Background

Matthew Box is a sworn member of the Australian Federal Police with a history of volunteering dating back to his secondary school years.

He has been involved with organisations such as the State Emergency Service, the Fitzroy Legal Service, the Scout Association, Barnardos and St John's Ambulance.

This nomination relates to his contribution to the Marymead Child and Family Centre Kids Companions Program.

Scope of Work

Matthew has been a volunteer with the Marymead Kids Companion Program for over two years.  The Program provides social opportunities and short periods of respite care for children affected by a disability—their own or that of a family member.

Matthew contributes in a number of ways, including:

  • As a child mentor, in which he performs the role of an adult role model and father figure for children who have been the victim of trauma.
  • As a volunteer with the boys group, which aims to engage children in a social environment.
  • Family support, which supports the families of children in the Program.
  • Advocacy, which uses his skills, knowledge and contacts to advocate for children and families in the Program.
  • Program ambassador, which entails speaking to the community, raising funds and recruiting volunteers.

Impact on the Community

Most studies related to reducing the risk factors for young people identify the need for long term, dedicated adult role models.

Matthew's contribution to the Marymead Kids Companion Program clearly benefits the individuals he mentors and the broader ACT community.  The children themselves are in many respects forgotten in the community, and many have the potential to be a burden on society either financially or through the criminal justice system.

Time Dedicated

Matthew dedicates at least 11 hours per week to the Program, but his contribution is generally much more than that.  His average contribution has been 200 hours per month.

Effort Required

Matthew has made a considerable time commitment to the Program, while working irregular hours in a demanding full-time job.
