Recipient: Glenys Joliffe

Nominated By: ACT Table Tennis Association

SAt present Glenys is president of the A.C.T. Table Tennis Association, and she has been for the last 10 years. Before becoming president she had been the executive officer or secretary for at least that long.

Her work for the Association is much more than presiding at committee meetings. She has developed policies and directions and works hard at pursuing goals for the Association and the sport. She is passionate about the sport and takes on her own shoulders a lot of the detailed administrative work. There is no activity within the administration of the sport that is exempt from her detailed scrutiny.

Her eye for detail makes all her contributions essential, in particular her work in liaising with, and preparing submissions to, the ACT Sport and Recreation Department.

She liaises with Table Tennis Australia, the peak body for the sport in the country and represents the A.C.T. at various meetings. She has been trusted with the membership of several specialised task forces; for example the development of the Sub-Committee, the Strategic Plan Organising Committee in 1999 and with the organisation of the pre-Olympic exhibition in 2000.

Another of her major interests is the participation of senior citizens in sport and activity. It is largely due to her interest, that the Table Tennis Association has a very large and enthusiastic Seniors Group that promotes weekly social activities for its members. At the more competitive level, Glenys has been active in the formation and prospering of a Veterans' Committee within Table Tennis Australia.

Another of her major interests has been the promotion of the sport in schools. She has spent a lot of time liaising with schools’ representatives, providing schools with equipment and organising coaching for school children. She herself has participated in the coaching.

One should mention her interest in promoting the welfare of athletes with disabilities. The ACT is one of the most active table tennis jurisdictions in this area and provides a lot of coaching and support.
