A Volunteer with a Big Heart
Sharon Sobey - the new ambassador for volunteering in the ACT
Sharon Sobey was proclaimed the new ambassador for volunteering in the ACT when, in National Volunteer Week, NRMA Insurance and Volunteering ACT announced the winner of the 2005 NRMA Insurance Volunteer of the Year Awards.
Sharon is an inspiration to us all. Still only a young woman and with many trials to overcome in her own life, she has dedicated her time and efforts to helping others in the community, successfully removing the ‘dis’ from disability.
She is, in part, a volunteer with the Canberra Blind Society, helping with administrative duties, and teaching Braille to other vision impaired members of our community, while achieving numerous other goals through her enthusiasm, strength of character and energy.
Sharon grew up as a member of the Scout movement and for the past 5 years has been running weekly activities for 6 and 7 year olds as a volunteer with Lake Ginninderra Sea Scout Group. She is also the visually impaired representative to the “Female Tandem Bike Riding Group” where she helps to co-ordinate outings for others with visual impairments.
In the midst of all this activity, Sharon has recently graduated from CIT with a Diploma in Social Work, and she plans to continue her work with and for the community both as a career and in a volunteer capacity.
Sharon, like so many other volunteers is a young volunteer with a big heart full of ambition for the volunteer work she undertakes in the community and is a truly worthy ambassador for all volunteers.
The NRMA Insurance Volunteer of the Year for 2005 and ambassador for volunteering in the ACT is Ms Sharon Sobey.
