SPORTING VOLUNTEERS RECOGNISED FOR TIRELESS EFFORTS
Wednesday 10 September 2003
ACT Minister for Sport, Ted Quinlan, today attended a luncheon in
the Bradman Pavilion at Manuka Oval, in honour of volunteers working
in the ACT sport and recreation community. Thirty-one volunteers
were presented with recognition awards in appreciation of their
commitment to assisting active participation in sport and recreation.
"Statistics show that over 17,000 volunteers in the ACT have
an involvement in sport and recreation. Recognition of their valuable
contributions is crucial to ongoing active participation in sport
and recreation at all levels," Mr Quinlan said.
"Many athletes are helped along the way to achieving their
goals by volunteers.
"The financial worth of volunteer contributions to sport and
recreation is immense and many clubs and organisations would cease
to exist without volunteer assistance. Volunteers truly are the
backbone of this industry".
The Thanks Volunteer Recognition Awards are a joint initiative
of Sport & Recreation ACT and ACTSPORT, aimed at recognising
outstanding volunteer service to sport and recreation in the ACT.
"It is important that sporting volunteers are shown appreciation
for their work towards making the ACT sport and recreation industry
thrive, and for the enjoyment their volunteering has given to others,"
Mr Quinlan said.
Volunteers were presented with a framed personal profile of their
volunteer contribution to the sport and recreation community.
Ends: Wednesday 10 September 2003
