Today launching the Volunteer of the Year Awards for 2003,
the Chief Minister, Mr. Jon Stanhope said “The recent
bushfires have highlighted just how much volunteers contribute
to our community - they are our heart and soul, our backbone
and fundamental to our city's wellbeing, essential, as we
have seen in situations such as we have just faced".
"I urge you all nominate a volunteer - to recognise
those who served during the bushfires, those who have given
before, and those will continue to give after the recovery,"
said Mr. Stanhope.

Chief Minister Jon Stanhope today launched the 2003 ACT Volunteer
of the Year Awards, saying the awards highlight the importance
and value of volunteering in the community.
The annual awards are a joint initiative of Volunteering
ACT and NRMA. Nominations are now open for the 2003 awards.
"Volunteering is an important expression of citizenship
and is essential to our democracy. It is a commitment of time
and energy for the benefit of society and the community,"
Mr Stanhope said.

NRMA Insurance and ACT Volunteering are calling for nominations
for the 2003 ACT Volunteer of the Year awards. The awards
recognise people who have made an outstanding contribution
to the ACT community over the past year.
The response to the recent bushfires that devastated the
ACT community clearly showed how the community works together
at its best.
According to ACT Volunteering Executive Director, Mary Porter,
the 2003 ACT Volunteer of the Year awards gives the ACT an
opportunity to acknowledge those people who have given their
time, and effort to help their community.
